# A busy kind of quiet, by Sedona Telehealth

> Sedona Telehealth explores the activity beneath calm in Selank research: rat gene expression, enzyme experiments, immune signals and an anxiety report.

Sedona conjures stillness for me. Selank’s rat gene-expression experiment makes an oddly busy starting point for thinking about calm.

## Gene activity after Selank

A paper about an anxiety-related peptide sent me into the rat frontal cortex. After Selank administration, the investigators reported significant expression changes in [45 genes at 1 h and 22 genes at 3 h](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/26924987/). These were genes involved in GABAergic neurotransmission, the system of signalling involving GABA. The Selank-induced changes correlated positively with changes produced by GABA itself.

That is a wonderfully busy opening for a subject usually imagined as quiet. The discrepancy delights me: a feeling we describe as quiet has led to an experiment full of molecular activity. Gene expression means gene activity; an experiment can register a great deal of it without telling us how a person feels.

Sedona brings a still landscape to mind. I like looking past that first impression. In this case the activity is in rat brain tissue, and the paper gives a very particular place to start: frontal cortex, gene expression, separate sampling times. That small scene rewards my curiosity before any grand account of calm has a chance to take over.

## Brain, blood and the anxiety report

The trail spreads beyond that opening experiment. An [assay using human plasma](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/11550013/) found that Selank inhibited enzymes that break down enkephalins. A [study in patients with anxiety-asthenic disorders](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18577961/) described immune-signalling changes. Those are quite different kinds of activity to encounter under the same peptide name.

There is also a [clinical report in generalized anxiety disorder](https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18454096/) describing anxiety reduction and mild activation. That pairing deserves room to breathe; the human report deserves a fresh start. A gene-expression result cannot supply someone’s experience by inference.

[Brain signals](/brain-signals) stays with the rat experiments. [Enkephalin breakdown](/enkephalins) follows the plasma assay, while [immune signals](/immune-signals) opens the patient immune findings. The [anxiety report](/anxiety-trial) is where the human outcome gets a separate hearing. After these detours, calm has acquired a surprisingly lively interior.

At Sedona Telehealth I puzzle over published research on Selank; this notebook is an editorial site, not a medical business or a source of medical advice.
